What is Local Food?
There are many definitions but we think of Local Food is being produced, processed, sold and eaten all within our region. It also involves a short and equally local supply chain.
What are the benefits?
There is more to it than just keeping those food miles low, as transport alone is generally responsible for about 10% of food’s carbon emissions.
Having a short, transparent supply chain fosters a closer relationship with the producers. So it’s easier to know when your food choices are encouraging methods that support a stable climate, better animal welfare and biodiversity
There are economic benefits, which don’t end with your local farmer. Research suggests a significant ‘multiplier effect’ on the local economy, as each local business, within the chain, is more likely to re-spend money within the region.
A short local supply chain can also be a more resilient one. While not being exempt from wider issues they are less vulnerable than long international supply chains controlled by the larger retailers.
