Green Durham is a not-for-profit Community Interest Company (CIC) which aims to help the people of County Durham and wider Northeast, live a more sustainable life.
Green Durham offers a website with a localised focus and a comprehensive approach to sustainable living. Rooted in permaculture principles, it addresses the interconnected social, environmental, and economic aspects of sustainability, aiming to promote community resilience, foster local connections, and support environmental stewardship.

Who gets to be listed?
The criteria to be listed, on the Green Durham map, is based on Location, Ownership and Ethics.
Location
Close enough to be of interest to the people of County Durham. Most organisations are within the traditional county area between the Tyne and the Tees but we include places in the wider region when they’re doing something rare or providing a service which isn’t available around Durham.
Ownership
Ethics
Listed organisations should share our concerns about the impact human activity is having on the environment and ecosystems. How climate change is and will continue to affect our lives and our concerns about the ability of our communities to cope with these challenges.
Articles
You will find a growing number of articles written by people actively involved in the green movements across the region.
We hope these writings inform and educate, challenge and stimulate discussion, direct you to the amazing array of local green projects and businesses and show the diversity of approaches and opinions.
Networks
Green Durham run several community email networks and social media groups, sharing news on local green action in our region.
List members can send emails to the network and will receive, typically, a few emails each week.
