Energy and Sustainability at Durham University

Greenspace Environmental Sustainability Strategy has been in place since 2009. We focus mainly on Biodiversity, Energy, Environmental Compliance, Staff and Student Engagement, Travel and Waste in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s). The University’s Energy and Sustainability Team deliver the Greenspace Movement. The Greenspace Movement promotes and coordinates the environmental initiatives across Durham University with the help of Environment Champions, Student Representatives and Steering groups.

For our students and staff we have, MyGreenspace app where you can be sustainable and get rewarded! You can earn Green Points for each activity you complete , the top four points earning individuals will be rewarded with a £20 voucher every month, from a choice of retailers.

We run exciting projects and opportunities for our students to be through our Greenspace Student Environment Group (GSEG) and we work with colleges and societies to roll out environmental initiatives across our campus and beyond.

We have Facebook and Instagram to communicate with staff, students, businesses and members of the public. Out social media channels allow us to promote our own events and other environmental initiatives across Durham. One of our key events is the Greenspace Festival, usually running in July. This is a really popular event with plenty of activity for staff, students and the local community to get involved with.
