A traditional Cumbrian working mill using waterpower to grind organic and biodynamic flour using French Burr millstones.
There are currently no suitable growers producing grain of the quality or quantity we require, in the north. Most mills blend with imported grain. We only mill British. So, although we aren’t yet milling a Durham grain, and Cumbria is not a good baking wheat growing area, yet, we are working on this as a long term aim. Our grain is grown especially for us in the Midlands and South East England. We supply to Clerveux artisan bakery in Darlington.
The Watermill is also home to one of the best organic, vegetarian tearooms in Cumbria, using the best, freshest and most local organic ingredients including produce from our own biodynamic smallholding. It has just received a Highly Commended accolade in the Cumbria Tourism Taste of Cumbria awards 2009. The Watermill has been baking for over thirty years, producing a great range and variety of breads using the twelve different flours milled, including wheat, barley, rye, spelt and oats.
